Health Information Technology AAS - Academic Plan

The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Health Information Technology is designed to develop the technical skills necessary for managing health information within the healthcare delivery system. The AAS degree program in Health Information Technology emphasizes the technical component of health information services and is designed to prepare entrylevel graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to use, analyze, abstract, code, present, and retrieve data in a variety of health care settings. Health Information Management professionals, in their capacity as Custodian of the Medical Record are responsible for safekeeping of Protected Health Information and compliance with governmental regulations. Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate is eligible to write the national certification examination and upon successful passing of this examination, receive the RHIT (Registered Health Information Technology) credentials. This program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM). The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) is the association of health information management (HIM) professionals. AHIMA Web site: www.ahima.org.

Notes


  • *This course requires college level readiness as measured by Accuplacer, ACT, or SAT scores; approved high school course work that is less than five years old; or successful completion of appropriate college-readiness course.
  • AAA 1001  – College 101: Student Experience is required for all new college students seeking degrees or transfer.
  • HIT 2089  requires the student to complete a 40-hour on-site practicum experience.
  • In order to meet program requirements, students registered for ENG 1021  or ENG 1031  must also register for ENG 0094  unless they can demonstrate otherwise meeting the ENG 0094 ​ standard through assessment testing, prior college coursework, or recent High School coursework. See an Advisor for details.
  • Students must complete a Criminal Background Check prior to being accepted into the HIT program and renew as necessary while they are enrolled in the program.
